Consent

Published 2026-09-05

Consent, in an authorization context, is a user's active agreement to a specific, disclosed use of their access or data — not a default that applies unless they opt out, and not an inference drawn from unrelated behavior. What makes a consent step meaningful is that the user can see plainly what's being requested and can decline it without losing access to something unrelated.

Consent that's bundled — a single approval covering several unrelated uses, presented as one take-it-or-leave-it choice — technically satisfies the letter of asking, but it doesn't give the user a real opportunity to grant one use while declining another. The value of consent as a control depends on the granularity at which it's actually offered.
