Device Posture

Published 2026-09-05

Device posture describes measurable facts about the endpoint a request is coming from: whether its operating system is current, whether disk encryption is enabled, whether it's enrolled in device management, whether it shows signs of compromise. A system that factors posture into its access decisions treats the same valid credentials differently depending on the device presenting them.

Posture checks are a snapshot, not a guarantee — a device can pass every check at the moment of evaluation and be compromised a minute later. They narrow the set of devices an attacker could use to act on stolen credentials; they don't replace the need to verify the request itself.
