Reconciliation

Published 2026-09-06

Reconciliation is what happens once a previously disconnected device or application regains connectivity: comparing the decisions it made locally, from its offline authorization cache, against what the authoritative policy source would have actually decided, and resolving any difference. An action taken offline under a cached grant that's since been revoked needs an explicit response once that's discovered — the action already happened, and reconciliation is where the system decides what to do about it.

A system that syncs its cache back up without ever actually checking whether offline actions were retroactively valid isn't truly reconciling — it's just refreshing the cache for next time, leaving whatever happened during the disconnected window unexamined regardless of whether it should have been allowed.
