Reputation-Gated Permission

Published 2026-09-07

A reputation-gated permission expands automatically as a principal accumulates a track record on a platform — more edits made without incident, more time as an active member, more positive interactions — rather than granting the full range of what a trusted, established member can do all at once, immediately at signup. A brand-new account starts with a narrow set of capabilities and earns broader ones incrementally, based on demonstrated, accumulated behavior rather than an upfront assumption of trustworthiness.

This is a deliberate response to a specific asymmetry: at the moment of signup, a platform has essentially no information about a new account beyond the fact that it was just created, which makes granting broad capability immediately a bet with no real basis. Letting trust accumulate through observed behavior over time gives the platform actual signal to base broader access on, rather than extending that access purely on faith.
