Share Link

Published 2026-09-06

A share link grants access to a specific resource to anyone who holds the link, without checking who they actually are — a deliberate design choice that trades identity verification for the convenience of not requiring the recipient to have an account or log in at all. The tradeoff is direct: the link itself becomes the entire access control, and anyone it reaches, whether through a forward, a copy-paste, or an accidental exposure, gets the same access the original recipient had.

This makes a share link's actual security entirely dependent on how well it stays contained to its intended recipients, which is considerably harder to guarantee than access controlled by verified identity — a link is trivial to forward, and once it's out of the original sharer's control, there's no way to know how far it's actually spread.
