Policy Portability

Published 2026-09-05

Policy portability is the degree to which an authorization policy, once defined, can be enforced consistently across different underlying platforms — different cloud providers, different infrastructure, different vendors — rather than needing to be reimplemented separately, and potentially inconsistently, for each one. An organization running workloads across several heterogeneous environments faces a real risk that the same policy intent ends up enforced slightly differently in each, simply because each platform's native controls work a little differently.

Achieving genuine portability usually means expressing policy in a way that's decoupled from any single platform's specific mechanism, and then translating or enforcing that platform-independent definition consistently everywhere it needs to apply — rather than treating each platform's own access-control system as the sole source of truth for policy running there.
